St. Anne’s Church/Fishing Village
The St. Anne’s Church and fishing village is a daily sight for us if you’re on our beach or boat. The church complex and village is a short beach walk or drive away. The church is by far one of the most famous Catholic icons in the country and worth a visit whatever your belief may be. There are a few stories as to how the St Anne shrine came to this location during the 1600s but the most popular being the statue drifted from a ship wrecked close to shore.
The church complex has some very old and lovely trees and the fishing village is interesting and usually bustling. A great place to mosey about, we can also arrange a guide to show your around.
Explore the Lagoon
The Puttalam lagoon is one of the islands largest. Mangrove swamps and small islands are scattered throughout the lagoon, hosting a wide range of bird and fish life. The Eastern shores of the lagoon borders Wilpattu National Park.
You can explore by kayak or we can arrange a motorboat and local guide.
Anuradhapura and Beyond
This ancient capital can be reached in less than 3 hours, making it a great day trip. The city believed to be founded around the 5th -10th century BC holds many well preserved ruins. Some of the remains include temples, palaces and advanced irrigation systems, some which are still in use today.
Mihintale is a short drive beyond Anuradhapura and is also an area of great interest. Know to many as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka this is a spiritual area with many old monasteries and ruins scattered about. Here also lie the ruins of what may be one of the world’s oldest hospitals.
Day trips to Anuradhapura and Mihintale can be arranged. Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and Dambulla lie just beyond and we would be happy to help arrange your trip to these destinations as well.
